Peak-to-valley height (HL) is standard, but adding 2D/3D metrics (Ra, Rz, Sq, Sp, Sv etc.) gives a fuller view of surface roughness. That helps predict coating adhesion, corrosion resistance, and performance more reliably.

For best 2D/3D parameter accuracy, Optical Grade X-Coarse (XC) tape is recommended. For just HL (peak height) readings, Coarse or XC tape may be used.
Yes. The incompressible polyester backing (50.8 µm / 2 mils) is automatically subtracted when measuring HL or using Linearize mode.

No—units arrive factory calibrated. The included Long-Form Certificate documents key parameters. Regular verification using the provided check shim and zero reference is advised, especially when probe or tip changed.
PosiSoft Desktop is included; it can open .SDF files, show 2D/3D plots, apply cut-offs & filters, and manage batches. Third-party software may also import .SDF files.
