Coating Inspection Application Notes

Coating Inspection Application Notes provided by DFT Instruments to provide as much help as much as possible for our customers. As well as various product videos and PDF product literature available on our website, we also have pages such as this with various Coating Inspection Application Notes.

Dry Film Thickness Measurement on Wood Substrates

Non-destructive measurement of wood finishes and other coatings on wood and wood products (MDF, Vaneer, laminated composites and more).

Ultrasonic Paint Thickness Measurement on Plastic Substrates

DeFelsko manufactures hand-held, non-destructive ultrasonic coating thickness gauges that are ideal for non-destructively measuring the dry film thickness of coatings on plastic. Many industries now use this nondestructive technology in their quality programs.

Powder Coating Thickness on Steel, Aluminum and Wood

Powder coating inspectors often need a means to verify the thickness of parts as early as possible in the coating process.

Paint Thickness Measurement on Drywall (Gypsum board)

The focus of this application is on DeFelsko’s unique ability to non-destructively measure paint thickness on gypsum board (more commonly referred to as drywall). Commercial contracts often require an independent inspection of the work upon completion.

Conformal Thickness Measurement on Printed Circuit Boards

Conformal coatings are applied to Printed Circuit Boards to protect the mounted electronic components from contaminates such as dust, sand, moisture, salt mist and conductive particles. DeFelsko manufactures hand-held, non-destructive coating thickness gauges that are ideal for these.

Automotive Paint Inspection – Paint Meters

DeFelsko manufactures the PosiTest DFT, which is a hand-held, non-destructive paint meter that is ideal for measuring the thickness of automotive paint on aluminum or steel automotive panels. For Automotive Refinishers, Resellers, Dealerships, Inspectors & more.

Automotive Paint Detailing

DeFelsko manufactures various hand-held, non-destructive paint thickness gages that are ideal for use in automotive paint detailing.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement of UV-Cured Coatings

Coating thickness gauges that use ultrasonic measurement techniques are becoming increasingly popular in industries that work with rigid substrates, such as wood, plastic and composites. This June 2008 Radtech Report article describes the working principle and benefits of ultrasonic testing.

Measurement of Lacquer thickness on Guitars

Lacquer is applied to the guitar to attain a glass-like sheen while showing the beauty and luster of the instrument. DeFelsko manufactures gauges that are ideal for measuring the dry film thickness of lacquers on guitar substrates such as graphite and wood.

Anodizing Thickness Measurement on Aluminium

DeFelsko manufactures a hand-held, non-destructive coating thickness gauge that is ideal for measuring the thickness of anodizing on aluminum.

Adhesion of Sealers on Thermal Spray Coatings

John J. Crowe and Michael J. Makosky, G.P.I.. discuss Adhesion of Sealers on Thermal Spray Coatings in accordance with ASTM D4541 (Section E) in this December 2003 JPCL article.

Measurement of Effects of Erosion and Corrosion

With ultrasonic thickness gages, an accurate measurement of the remaining wall thickness of a substrate can be taken on pipes, pressure vessels, storage tanks, boilers or other equipment prone to erosion or corrosion.

Measurement of Adhesion Strength

The PosiTest AT series of pull-off adhesion testers, along with proper selection of dolly size, enable an operator to accurately measure the bond strength of most types of coating applied to any rigid substrate.

Measuring Outdoor Climatic Conditions

A major factor affecting the long term performance of coatings on steel structures is the climatic conditions during pre-treatment and coating application.

Coating Thickness Measurement on Wires

DeFelsko manufactures various hand-held, non-destructive paint thickness gauges that are ideal for measuring coating thickness on wires.

Intumescent Fire Resistive Coating Thickness Measurement

These coatings are designed to provide an insulating barrier between flames and steel and are necessary to ensure the structural performance of the steel members at the temperatures anticipated during a fully developed fire. Both of these characteristics are highly dependent on the proper thickness.

Ultrasonic Measurement of Aircraft Windows

DeFelsko manufactures a hand-held, non-destructive ultrasonic thickness gauge that is ideal for measuring the thickness of aircraft windows during the window restoration process.

Coating Thickness Measurement on Masonry Substrates

DeFelsko has the unique ability to non-destructively measure coating thickness on masonry. This eliminates the need to repair the coating after inspection, saving time for both the inspector and the contractor.

Screen Printing – Measurements (mesh, emulsion, stencil thickness)

The PosiTector 6000 FS accurately and non-destructively measures mesh, emulsion and stencil thickness, as well as substrate and dry ink deposit thickness.

OPC Drum Wear Measurement

The OPC drum is the most expensive component of a toner cartridge and drives the entire print process. Life expectancy is considered depleted when 5 to 15 microns (0.2 to 0.6 mils) of coating has been worn away. As the amount of wear approaches half of its original thickness, automatic scrap decisions are often made.
