Measuring Paint Thickness on Steel 0:21
Learn the benefits of and how to use IMO PSPC 90/10 mode with the PosiTector 6000 Advanced Coating Thickness Gauge for ALL Metal Substrates in a step-by-step guide.
The PosiTest is a mechanical, magnetic pull-off gauge built for fast, direct readings of coating thickness on steel. It features a rare earth permanent magnet that resists drift over time, a large dial for easier reading, and a mechanism that holds the reading after the magnet separates from the surface—making it far easier to view and record results.
As with all our DeFelsko instruments, your PosiTest from DFT Instruments is supplied with calibration, warranty, and local UK support to ensure performance that’s reliable and inspection-ready.
Ultra-Durable Probe – Precision carbide-tipped sensor delivers exceptional wear resistance for long service life and consistent accuracy.
Tough, All-Weather Body – Extra-rugged housing shrugs off mechanical shock and is unaffected by water, acids, or common solvents.
Stable, No-Pivot Design – The gauge’s fully supported structure ensures firm, positive placement on the surface with no rocking or pivoting during measurement.
Clear Feedback – Distinct visual and audible cues confirm the exact moment a valid thickness reading is captured.
Built-in V-Grooves – Machined grooves in both the probe housing and gauge base help achieve precise alignment on pipes, tubes, and other curved parts.
True Coating Deposition
Pull-off measurements give you thickness values representative of how much coating is actually adhering—excluding trap-out or surface irregularity.
Durability Over Time
The PosiTest’s rare earth magnet and mechanical design mean little risk of drift even after long periods of storage or infrequent use.
Ease of Inspection
Holding the reading after the magnet pulls lets inspectors get cleaner results, particularly in difficult viewing angles or tight spaces.
Ideal for Field Use
Works without batteries or electronics, so it’s rugged, reliable, and suited for environments where power or delicate equipment is a liability.
Compliance & Traceability
Meets relevant standards for magnetic pull-off coating thickness; suitable for quality assurance, audit, and ensuring coatings meet specification.
Decades of Experience – Since 1998, DFT has supplied quality inspection instrumentation across the UK & Europe, developing hands-on expertise in coating measurement.

A really helpful video to show an overview of the DeFelsko coating thickness gauge range.
Large dial with high spring pressure for more distinct magnet pull-off.
Reading remains visible after pull-off, allowing easier recording.
Rare earth permanent magnet provides consistent magnetic force with no drift.
Rugged, corrosion-resistant brass body for harsh environments.
Measurement possible even on hot surfaces (when properly handled), subject to allowable ranges.
Can be used underwater (fresh or saltwater), cleaned after use in saltwater.
No batteries or electronics required — mechanical operation ensures simplicity and reliability.
V-Groove probe/contact area helps on curved surfaces like pipes or tubes.
GO/NO-GO settings (on some models) for rapid assessment.
Specification | Details |
---|---|
Measurement Range (Dial) | Varies by model — typical ranges cover small to moderate coatings (e.g. 0-200 µm / equivalent mils) [depends on model version] |
Accuracy | Precise dial mechanism; avoids drift thanks to permanent magnet construction. Manufacturer lists standards compliance. |
Dial Hold | The gauge retains the reading after pull-off for easy viewing. |
Temperature Capability | Can measure on surfaces from about −50 °C to +100 °C / −58 °F to +212 °F when conditions permit. Instrument body must remain within its safe operating temperature. |
Construction | Corrosion-resistant brass, durable mechanical parts; no electrical components. |
Standards | Meets or conforms to relevant magnetic pull-off coating thickness standards. |
Model | Best For |
---|---|
PosiTest F (Standard dial range) | Everyday steel coating inspections, quick QA checks |
PosiTest F-High Range | Thicker coatings where standard version might max out |
PosiTest F-Special Version | Custom ranges or GO/NO-GO gauge settings for specific spec |
(Note: model names and ranges are illustrative; check with DFT for exact stock & range options you need.)
PosiTest uses a larger dial, higher spring pressure, and retains the reading after pull-off. The PosiPen is more compact and suited to tight or hot spots.
Very little. Its rare-earth permanent magnet means magnetic strength holds steady. Mechanical parts may need occasional check, but it’s far more stable than many magnetic gauges with adjustable magnets.
Steel surfaces primarily. Curved parts are fine using the V-groove probe. Hot surfaces can be measured if the gauge is handled properly and within temperature allowances.
Yes, the brass construction permits immersion; saltwater residues should be rinsed off with fresh water after use to maintain longevity.
No. The PosiTest is entirely mechanical—no batteries or hull-over electronics. That makes it very rugged.
No. The PosiTest DFT is designed for simple operation. DFT’s UK support team are available for guidance if required.
Ensure the dial is read when the magnet releases, use the preserved reading function, and subtract any base metal roughness (using base metal reading) especially on rough steel surfaces.
