  • Rugged IP65 enclosure – Weatherproof, dustproof and water-resistant body built for use in demanding shop or site conditions.

  • Automatic self-check and calibration – Performs diagnostic tests and auto-calibration at start-up using the protective base plate with integrated calibration tile.

  • High-speed readings – Captures more than 60 measurements per minute for rapid inspection of large areas.

  • Advanced scan options – Two powerful scan modes (Advanced models) for efficient gloss mapping across extensive surfaces.

  • Flexible data transfer – USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for seamless use with PosiSoft software on PC, Mac or smartphone.

  • Certified accuracy – Supplied with a Certificate of Calibration traceable to the National Research Council (NRC) for both the probe and gloss standard.

  • International standards compliance – Meets or exceeds ASTM C584/D523/D4039, ISO 2813/7668, JIS Z 8741 and AS/NZS 1580.602.2 requirements.

  • Consistent Aesthetic Quality — Ensures that painted or coated surfaces have the intended finish and reflective quality, avoiding gloss mismatches.

  • Process Control & Job Acceptance — Helps identify coating, application, or surface preparation issues early, reducing waste and rework.

  • Brand & Appearance Standards — Many industries specify gloss levels (e.g. automotive, electronics, decorative coatings, architecture) so measurable results are needed.

  • Versatility for Different Surfaces & Angles — Some surfaces look different under various viewing angles; measuring at 20°, 60°, or 85° and also measuring haze helps capture those differences precisely.

  • Objective, Traceable Data — A gloss meter gives numerical values rather than subjective observation, allowing clear records for audits, comparison or QC.

  • Product Consistency Across Batches – Ensures different production runs match in appearance, maintaining brand quality and customer satisfaction.

  • Performance Verification – Confirms that protective or decorative coatings meet manufacturer or regulatory specifications for reflectivity and finish durability.

PosiTector SPG FAQ’s

What is the difference between measuring at 20°, 60°, and 85°?

  • 60° is the standard for semi-gloss surfaces.

  • If your gloss reading at 60° is above ~70 GU, switching to a 20° angle gives better discrimination for high gloss finishes.

  • If reading is below 10 GU at 60°, the 85° angle helps measure matte or low gloss finishes more accurately.

What is the Haze Index and when is it used?

Haze Index (according to ASTM D4039) is the difference between gloss readings at 60° and 20°—useful when there is a milky or hazy bloom on a surface even if the gloss seems high. Only certain models/probes support haze calculation.

How do I maintain accurate readings over time?

Keep the calibration tile clean, store multiple calibration standards if needed, use the auto-calibration where available, and regularly check against known gloss standards.

What environmental conditions affect gloss measurement?

Temperature and humidity can affect reflectivity and sensor performance. The GLS operates reliably between 0°–45 °C (32°–113 °F) in non-condensing conditions. Ensure surface is clean and free of dust or moisture.

How many readings can I store and how do I access them?

  • Standard bodies store ~1,000 readings per probe.

  • Advanced bodies store up to ~250,000 readings across batches.
Data can be downloaded using USB or sync via WiFi or Bluetooth in Advanced models.

Does the GLS wrist strap / holster / protective gear matter?

Yes — protecting the probe, display, and calibration tile from drops or impacts, and keeping surfaces and optics clean helps maintain precise performance.
